A goal planning template that moves with you

Most templates end up in a drawer. This one turns a goal into milestones and first steps, then stays with you while you build it.

The template

Six parts. Fill them in order and a wish becomes a plan you can actually start on.

My goal plan
1

Name it

Write your goal in one sentence, as if it's already true. A clear name is the first act of building.

Prompt: "I have…" or "I am…" — not "I hope to…"
2

Why it matters

What changes in your life when this is real? This is what pulls you forward on the days motivation doesn't.

Prompt: When this is done, I'll feel… and I'll be able to…
3

Where I stand now

An honest starting point: what you already have, and what's missing. You can't plan a crossing without knowing which bank you're on.

Prompt: I already have… What I still need is…
4

Milestones

Three to five checkpoints between here and done. Each one should be something you'd know for certain you'd reached.

Prompt: First I'll have… then… then…
5

First three steps

The next three actions toward milestone one, smallest first. Small enough to start this week.

Prompt: This week I will…
6

One step before sleep

Each night, name tomorrow's single step. Goals are built a day at a time, not a year at a time.

Prompt: Tomorrow, the one thing I'll do is…

A filled-in example

Here's how one goal looks once it's been shaped.

Name it

I sell my pottery at a weekend market stall.

Why it matters

I'll stop hiding what I make, meet the people who love it, and earn from something that's mine.

Where I stand now

I have a wheel, a kiln share and about 30 finished pieces. I still need a stall permit, pricing and a table setup.

Milestones
  • 60 pieces ready to sell
  • Stall booked at the local market
  • First market day done
  • Selling monthly
First three steps
  • Email the market organiser about stall fees
  • Price my 30 pieces
  • Block out two throwing sessions this week
One step before sleep

Tomorrow: send the email to the market organiser.
