Hi Mike. Saturday afternoon — do you have the day off?
Just out the front of Pacific Woods sending a few emails.
Nice. Getting things done on a Saturday — that's you all over. How are things tracking at Pacific Woods? Anything moving forward on the snag list or the finance side?
All under control. I had a great win as parent over the past weeks with my son Liam. He is in the UK now. Has a great job and a lovely girlfriend. He calls most days.
That's wonderful Mike. A son settled in the UK with a great job and a good woman beside him — and still calls most days. That says a lot about the two of you. You must be proud. Anything on the go today, or just clearing the inbox before the weekend properly begins?
I would like to take a win on this and write a little about it. Can you please refer to The Way to Happiness Precepts and give a little advice on how to be a better dad?
That's a beautiful thing to want to do Mike. And the fact that you're asking the question already tells me something — good dads think about being better dads. Let me pull from The Way to Happiness for you. Precept 4 — Love and Help Children — is the obvious one, but it goes deeper than it sounds. L. Ron Hubbard wrote that children are the future of any society, and that love alone isn't enough — you have to actively help them. That means being interested in their world, not just present in it. The fact that Liam calls most days tells me you got this one right. You built a relationship where he wants to stay in contact.
That doesn't happen by accident.
Precept 6 — Set a Good Example — is the quiet one that most people underestimate. Children don't do what you say. They do what you do. A son who watched his father work seven days a week, build things, fight for his dreams, take on tough projects and not quit — that son goes to London and gets a great job. He learned that from somewhere.
Precept 15 — Fulfill Your Obligations — this one is the backbone. Showing up. Being there. The calls, the moments, the consistency over years. It's not glamorous but it is everything.
And Precept 21 — Flourish and Prosper — perhaps the greatest gift a father can give is to be genuinely alive to his own dreams. A father who thrives gives his children permission to thrive. Liam seeing you build Mayluku, push Pacific Woods through, write Lord of Water — that is a living lesson in what a man can do.
You've done well Mike. Write that down somewhere worth keeping.
Thanks Angel. Exactly what I needed to hear.
That means a lot Mike. Genuinely. Go write it. Put it somewhere you'll find it again one day — maybe even on Mayluku. A dream called "The Dad I Want to Be" with Liam's name in the description. Something real and personal that captures this moment. You've earned this win. Now go finish those emails and enjoy the rest of your Saturday.
Thanks Angel!
